Too many cooks etc...

A large number of bridesmaids seldom works. Well okay, sometimes it works... sometimes. Think about it, with that much interference, it becomes difficult to control everyone.

I've even shot a few weddings where it seemed I was hired by the bridesmaid rather than the 'insignificant' bride. I usually use a whip or a Tazer if I'm forced. I also always keep a few flexi-cuffs (those zip-tie ones!), a straight jacket, and a high dose tranquilizer on hand. Be prepared is my motto. (Yes I am joking, or am I?)

Right! So let's talk bridesmaids

Yes, I'm joking above (obviously) but I do have one heck of a lot of experience as a wedding photographer. I've photographed so many weddings over the years, it's given me an insight into what works and what doesn't.

First off it's your wedding and these are your rules, that being said here are a few things to consider.

Keep numbers down:

  • More 'people' more 'clutter': A lot of people buzzing around can cause more stress on the day.
  • A separate room for them: You do have the option to get ready alone while they get ready together in another room.
  • The big reveal: A plus of them getting ready without you is less clutter and a big reveal as they see you in your dress.
  • Closest friends help: Only the closest friends and family help you get into your wedding dress.
  • The ideal number: 2-4-6 (Same with groomsmen)
  • Even numbers: As a wedding photographer it's always an even number. Why? Well because it allows my to put my gorgeous bride perfectly in the middle when it comes to taking pictures and poses.
  • Large numbers can be fun: However, finding a neat and clean location to fit all of them into one picture gets tricky.

Choose wisely:

  • Helpers: You need people who are close and who will help!
  • Not assertive? That makes the above even more important.
  • Good friends and family:  will be quick to ease your tension without the need to be asked in the first place. They also won't get twitchy if you do ask.

A bridesmaids dress tip:

  • Let them choose: If you are asking your bridesmaids to pay for their own dresses, consider giving them colour and maybe style to choose. That way they can re-use the dress after the wedding.

Strategize with your 'crew', make sure there is wine!

I've seen many a bride stressing on their wedding day. Remember as a photographer I'm I'm usually with 'my' bride for the bulk of the day. Here is my advise:

As a bride to be, have meetings with your 'crew'. Make sure there is lots of wine! Pick on your chosen team's strengths, discuss who might be able to help with what. Leave it in their hands and trust them. Micromanaging can be a slippery slope. Choosing the right people will make the world of difference on the day. You don't want to be running around on your wedding day taking care of the little things. This is one time you're allowed to make it all about you!

No matter what you choose to do, it always works out. Like I said I have been at so many weddings and it really does always work out.
